WARNING:
I am not responsible for loss of data or any damages that
could occur on the iPod or anything else you have! This
program has NOT been tested with all of the apple firmware
updates, versions 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 have not been tested.
Version 1.1 has been tested. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
NOTE:
There has been a report that if you upgrade your iPod
with a non-powered firewire (in manual firewire mode)
The iPod gets messed up. A possible solution is to use
the power adapter to finished the upgrade process. The
iPod Updater is incompatible with anything older than
windows 2000. (Windows ME and windows 98se don't work)
To
use the iPod updater for windows: (7-14-02)
- Read
the FAQ first!!
- You need
to get the firmware file. I cannot provide the firmware
file for download.
- The
file is called firmware and is located under"iPod
Software x.x.x Updater" (where x.x.x is the
version) and in that folder there is a folder called
"contents" and in that folder there is
folder called "resources" and in THAT
folder there should be a file called "firmware",
this is what you want.
- The
file size is 2.37MB for either version 1.0.3 or
1.0.4 If the file is not this size, then it might
be compressed or the wrong file!
- The
file size for the new 1.1 firmware is 3.51MB (3,687,424
bytes)
- Launch the
application
- The program
will attempt to check for an iPod attached to the computer.
- Once the
program has started (the screen should look something
like the picture on the top of this page), click "Browse
for File" and select the firmware file. This version
of the program will ONLY accept the version 1.1 firmware.
Then follow the instructions on the screen.
- The ipod
will display an image to reconnect the firewire. Connect
the firewire cable at this time. The ipod will then
display a progress bar. When this finishes the iPod
will eventually show up as a drive again.
Bugs:
- This is
BETA software, so there
are many bugs probably :)
- You need
to get the firmware file since I don't want to be sued
by Apple
- Doesn't
work in winME or earlier yet
Changes:
- New GUI
interface
- Automatically
detects iPod
- Only allows
selection of the correct firmware
- Firmware
upgrading is faster
A
Report About the iPod Updater:
Works a treat
- I updated my iPod to 1.0.4 under Windows 2000 with a
powered
firewire PC Card.
I was worried that I would have to rely on my Mac Zealot
friends in order to
do firmware upgrades, but you have saved me the trouble.
I decided against
trying it under Windows XP - I have been getting 'delayed
write failures' as I have a Texas Instruments PC Card
(which is a known
issue on the EphPod site and MediaFour site as well).
